Today is another exciting day in the journey of the return of Railways to Mauritius.

It is remarkable how quickly the milestone of 2 million commuters has been reached.

It was only one year ago that the Metro Express was jointly inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and Prime Minister Modi. The commercial operations began a couple of months later and there was also a long disruption due to Covid Pandemic. Therefore this milestone reflects the great enthusiasm with which people of Mauritius have welcomed the Metro operations.

This is a flagship project of India Mauritius collaboration and we are proud to be associated with the construction of this world-class infrastructure. I would like to thank all the workers and engineers and managers who have worked hard day and night to turn this into a reality.

The huge popularity of Metro Express among Mauritian people is because it is safe, efficient and quick mode of public transport. It is also environment friendlier and is helping to contribute to generate economic activities along its route.

Work on phase-II of the project is being implemented at a good pace and the expansion of the network will provide better connectivity to a larger number of regions on the island.

Railways have always captured popular imagination and provided fascinating settings and backdrop for legendary thrillers and movies, including Bollywood songs. I hope to see Metro Express in Mauritius also making its film debut at some stage.
