Cyber city

Prof. B.S. Upadhyaya Training Centre situated at Piton plays a key role in the technical training of personnel in Mauritius. The Training Centre is managed by the Industrial and Vocational Training Board, Ministry of Education, Culture and Human Resources. The Centre was officially inaugurated by Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India during her State Visit to Mauritius in August 1982. The project was designed by the Government of Mauritius in collaboration with the Government of India and the World Bank. The Centre is named after the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Prof. Bhagwat Saran Upadhyaya who passed away in harness on August 8, 1982 just two weeks before the State Visit of Smt. Gandhi to Mauritius. He was the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius from May 1981 to August 1982. The naming of the Centre was done at the request of the people of Mauritius and Smt. Gandhi noted in her inaugural speech that she was overwhelmed seeing the emotional bonding which the people of Mauritius had preserved for India.

The compound of Prof. B.S. Upadhyaya Training Centre spans over 4 acres which include the workshops, classrooms, resource centre, offices, canteen and other structures. The Training Centre caters both to immediate and long term technical training objectives through short term basic and advanced courses in selected trades for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers in industry and through conducting full term basic training of one year duration.

The training facilities at the Upadhyaya Training Centre were expanded and upgraded by the Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) through grant from Government of India for introducing two new training courses, viz. Radio and Television Servicing and Refrigeration and Air conditioning.

During January 1990, the Project was assigned to HMT on a turnkey basis. An expert from HMT deputed to Mauritius made a full assessment of the requirements of hardware, software and services required for the upgradation of facilities for the existing trades and the various facilities for the two new trades that were to be introduced at the Centre.
