ITEC Day Celebrated by High Commission of India on 29 March 2019

To mark the success of the ongoing Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme in Mauritius, under which nearly 300 Mauritian professionals from diverse fields receive short term training in India every year. The High Commission of India celebrated the “ITEC Day” on 29 March 2019 at the Auditorium of Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, Phoenix. 

The event was graced by Mr. Dass Appadu, Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Civil Service and Administrative Reforms, Government of Mauritius as Chief Guest. Shri K.D. Dewal, the Acting High Commissioner of India, senior officials of the Government of the Republic of Mauritius and about 450 ITEC trainees attended the event.

Mauritius is one of the largest participants in the ITEC programme of the Government of India. In his remarks, Mr. Appadu from Ministry of Civil Service and Administrative Reforms praised the ITEC programme and on behalf of his Minister thanked Government of India for its initiative. The ITEC programme has been especially beneficial for the Mauritian security forces. They have received training in various areas of security, including policing and counter-terrorism, as well as emergency humanitarian and disaster relief operations.

The Acting High Commissioner of India Shri K.D. Dewal highlighted the utilization and training opportunities under the ITEC programme, which has also contributed significantly towards closer bilateral cooperation between India and Mauritius. The ITEC programme reaches out to people of 161 partner countries from Asia, Africa, East Europe, Latin American, the Caribbean as well as Pacific and Small Islands countries. Further innovations in the technical cooperation would bring many mutual benefits to Mauritius and India.

On the occasion, four ITEC scholars shared their experiences and spoke during the panel discussions organized by the Mission first time on the subject on “Role of ITEC Programme in mid-career Skill Enhancement”. This initiative was appreciated by the large number of attendees.
