Hon. Minister of Arts and Culture of Mauritius H.E. Mr Prithvirajsingh Roopun, who will accompany Hon. Prime Minister of Mauritius H.E. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth to the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to be held in Varanasi from 21-23 Jan 2019, was the Chief Guest for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas organized by the High Commission of India on 9 January 2019 at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, Phoenix.

Addressing the gathering the Honourable Minister said that this year’s Kumbh Mela being organized in Prayagraj from January-March will be the first Kumbh Mela after it has been inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in December 2017.

During the celebration, a talented Mauritian artist Ms Neetusha Ramprogus gave a beautiful rendering of Vaishnav Jan To, one of the favourite bhajans of Mahtama Gandhi. She was also presented with a letter of appreciation from Honourable External Affairs Minister of India on the occasion.

The teachers and Mauritian students of the Indira Gandhi for Centre for Indian Culture presented Bhajans and dance performance on the occasion.

During the event, several young Mauritians, the winners of the Bharat Ko Jaaniye quiz, were presented awards jointly by the Honourable Minister and the High Commissioner of India Shri Tanmaya Lal.

The High Commissioner in his remarks spoke about the unique and special relationship between Mauritius and India and said that the close people to people bonds formed the bedrock of the bilateral relations between India and Mauritius.

The event was well attended by Heads and representatives from a wide range of socio-cultural organisations of Mauritius.
