Press Release - Gifting of Defender aircraft engines and spares 

Pursuant to the request of the Government of the Republic of Mauritius, the Government of India has agreed to gift spare components for the Defender aircraft, used by the Mauritius National Coast Guard for surveillance of the Mauritian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

2.   The spares, worth approximately MUR 35 Million, include three engines and other critical components which will enhance not only the operational availability of the aircraft, but would also ensure that the aircraft is well-supported for years to come. This will be a critical enhancement of the maritime surveillance capabilities of the Mauritius National Coast Guard. This is another significant step towards strengthening the unique relationship between India and Mauritius

3.   The Indian Naval Ship Sukanya, which has been deployed in Mauritian waters since 28 June 2013 to undertake joint patrolling and surveillance of the Mauritian EEZ at the request of the Government of Mauritius, has carried the Defender aircraft spares on board.  4.    The High Commission of India is organizing a brief ceremony to mark the handing over of the Defender aircraft spares onboard INS Sukanya at Quay A, Port Area, at 1650hrs on Friday, 12 July, 2013, with Dr the Hon. Arvin Boollel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of the Republic of Mauritius as Chief Guest. HE Mr T P Seetharam, High Commissioner of India, the Senior Chief executive, Prime Minister’s Office, the Commissioner of Police, the Director General of the Mauritius Ports authority and other dignitaries will be present. The handing over ceremony will be followed by a press interaction and refreshments.
