Foreign Secretary of India Dr. S. Jaishankar arrived in Mauritius today on an official visit from 25-28 March 2017. During the visit, Dr. Jaishankar will be meeting the political leadership of Mauritius and review the entire gamut of bilateral relations.

Foreign Secretary Jaishankar called on Hon. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius today. During the meeting, both sides recalled that their ties, rooted in history and ancestry, are characterized by deep mutual trust and shared interests. They expressed satisfaction over the ongoing, significant consolidation of their relations in diverse areas. Foreign Secretary recalled that Government of India had extended special treatment to Mauritius in several areas, including in its OCI scheme, in tax matters and in renewing CECPA talks. Prime Minister Jugnauth thanked the Government of India for its Special Economic Package of USD 353 million for five priority projects of Government of Mauritius, namely the Metro Express, new Supreme Court building, Social Housing, new ENT Hospital and supply of digital tablets to primary school children.

Both sides reiterated their determination to implement three other mutually agreed projects in a timely manner, namely the POL hub at Albion, the development of infrastructure at the Outer island of Agalega, and Project Trident. They also discussed ways and means of identifying other projects of priority to both sides and working out mutually acceptable financing modalities for their implementation, in order to further consolidate their longstanding and time-tested bilateral relationship.

Foreign Secretary Dr. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Jugnauth also reviewed bilateral cooperation in the areas of maritime security, training and capacity building and trade and investment cooperation.

During his visit, Foreign Secretary Dr. Jaishankar will be calling on the President of Mauritius Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, Minister Mentor Sir Anerood Jugnauth and Foreign Minister Mr. Seetanah Lutchmeenaraidoo, as well as meet other political leaders, senior officials and members of the Indian community.
