India-Mauritius Co-operation in the Field of Education

India is one among the most favourite destinations of Mauritian students for higher education. Every year, around 300 Mauritian students go to India in pursuance of higher education in variety of spheres --- Sciences, ICT, Engineering, Medicine, Humanities, Management, Commerce and Indian languages. Umbilical ties, shared culture, a feeling of 'Home away from Home' and rich variety of quality education with affordable price are the main reasons for opting India as higher education destination. Centres of academic excellence in the areas of sciences, technology, ICT and humanities with a well-defined recognizing and regulatory system have added to the charm of 'Destination India' in students' journey towards higher education and assured career.

Detailed literature about recognized Indian Universities and affiliated colleges is available at the library of the High Commission of India in Port Louis. This literature is published by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi - apex federation of recognized Indian Universities. 

Several Indian educational institutions have also started functioning in Mauritius.

Scholarships to Mauritian students

Indian Government offers slots to Mauritian students, for Undergraduate and Post-graduate studies in various fields, ranging from Humanities, Indian languages, Fine Arts to Sciences, Engineering and Management in Indian Universities. Scholarships are NOT provided for Medicine and related fields (except Ayurvedic medicine, for which there is one slot), Law and Education (B.Ed./M.Ed. etc.). Scholarships are also not provided for IITs and IIMs. These institutions have their own admission procedure.

Apart from above, scholarships are also offered under (i) PG Medical Scholarship Scheme-Generally 3 slots are offered for Mauritian nationals to pursue postgraduate medical courses at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), (ii) Scholarship Scheme for Craft Instructors - 2 to 4 slots are offered to Mauritius nationals, (iii)Scholarship Scheme for Propagation of Hindi Abroad - 2-4 slots are offered to Mauritian nationals at Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra, (iv) Africa day Scholarship Scheme - 01 slot on rotation basis to national of any of the African Countries. These scholarships (except scholarship scheme for propagation of Hindi abroad) are coordinated by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi.

Scholarship offers to Mauritian students are conveyed every year to the Mauritian Ministry of Education. The Ministry invites applications from eligible candidates through press advertisements in February/March every year. After screening and short listing of applications, the Ministry calls the candidates for interviews. Applications of nominated candidates are sent to the ICCR, through High Commission of India in Mauritius. The ICCR strives to get confirmations for admissions from autonomous Indian Universities, which are

communicated to the nominees through the Ministry of Education, Government of Mauritius. However, acceptance of all nominations is NOT guaranteed and is subject to confirmation by autonomous Indian Universities. The slots are materialized, subject to various parameters, namely, eligibility in terms of subjects/grades in qualifying examination, availability of desired course/seats in desired institution etc. Nominated candidates are advised to give multiple choices of courses/institutions for better utilization of slots.

Government of India's self-financing slots

Besides scholarships, Government of India provides few self-financing seats in Medical/ Engineering/Pharmacy colleges in prestigious government institutions. Such slots are advertised by the High Commission of India every year and applications are forwarded by the High Commission to the Government of India for processing and materialization. Final selection is done by Indian authorities.

Applications for Undergraduate/Post Graduate Physical Education courses at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior (Deemed University) are also sent through the High Commission of India, Mauritius and admissions are done after clearances from relevant Ministries of the Government of India and subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria and passing of admission Test at the Institute.

Government of India also facilitates (i) admission for wards of PIOs and NRIs under Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) and (ii) direct admission to eligible Foreign Nationals / PIOs / NRIs to undergraduate engineering programs offered by the National Institutes of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering Colleges) and other centrally funded institutions (other than IITs) and Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme through Educational Consultants India Limited (Ed.CIL).

Other admissions on self-financing basis

For all other self-financing courses, students are advised to apply direct to recognized universities/institutions. Postal/e-mail addresses, web sites, phone/fax numbers etc. of recognized India institutions can be obtained from the literature available at the library of the High Commission of India and/or from the aforementioned web sites of such institutions. Provisional Student Visa/Student Visa is issued to new / continuing self-financing students on presentation of eligibility/ provisional admission/ confirmed admission documents from recognized Indian universities/institutions.

Research Visa

Research scholars can go to India for studies only after obtaining a Research Visa. Application for Research Visa on prescribed proforma, accompanied by the certificate of

affiliation signed by the Competent Authority Registrar of concerned university, synopsis of proposed Research work and proposed itinerary in India, has to be submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India through Indian High Commission in Mauritius. After obtaining clearance from authorities, Research visa is issued. The process may take around six months or more.
