India and Mauritius Economic Relations

In the last five years, India has been among the leading trading partners of Mauritius. In 2023, India represented 10.2 % share of Mauritian total imports and ranked 3rd in their main countries of import. The volume of exports from India to Mauritius was USD 1,027 million in 2018, USD 776 million in 2019, USD 405 million in 2020, USD 808 million in 2021, USD 632 million in 2022 and USD 646 million in 2023. Currently, top 5 Indian exports to Mauritius and market share for these products in Mauritius are pharmaceuticals, cotton, cereals, motor vehicles and mineral fuels.   It is also a major supplier of raw materials for the local industry namely supplying yarn and fabrics to the textile and clothing industry.

The value of Mauritian exports to India in 2019 was USD 24 million, USD 32 million in 2020, USD 45 million in 2021, USD 57 million in 2022 and USD 55 million in 2023. In 2023, the main products exported included medical devices, scrap metal, fish meal and scrap copper amongst others. Scrap aluminum, vanilla beans, scrap paper, parts of machinery and garments were other major commodities exported by Mauritius to India in 2023.

Cumulative FDI equity inflows from Mauritius to India during the period April 2000 – September 2023 amounted to USD 167 billion (25% of total FDI inflows into India over this period). FDI equity inflows from Mauritius to India for FY 2022-23 amounted to USD 6.13 billion and for April -September (FY 2023-24) amounted to USD 2.95 billion, making it the second largest source of FDI into India for both FYs, after Singapore.

Many prominent Indian Public Sector Enterprises are currently functioning in Mauritius. The Bank of Baroda (BoB), Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), and New India Assurance Corporation (NIAC) were the first to establish operations, followed by other PSUs including Telecommunications Consultant India Ltd (TCIL), IndianOil (Mauritius) Limited (IOML), Mahanagar Telephone (Mauritius) Ltd., State Bank of India (Mauritius) Limited, NBCC Ltd and EdCIL (India) Ltd. Besides their core activities, the PSUs have also contributed to various activities in Mauritius under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) schemes.

There are approximately 17,403 Indian nationals and 10,274 OCI card holders currently in Mauritius. Some 64 Indian companies have invested in Mauritius in several sectors such as healthcare, education, ICT, Freeport and financial services. Some of the prominent Indian companies operating in Mauritius are Amity, Infosys, Dr. Aggarwal’s Eye Hospital, The Oberoi etc.
