Press Release: Celebration of Constitution Day 2016

The High Commission of India celebrated ‘CONSTITUTION DAY’ on 26 Nov 2016 at the Auditorium of Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, Phoenix. The programme included a lecture on 'Contemporary Legal Issues and India-Mauritius Exchanges & Cooperation in the Legal Arena' delivered by the Chief Guest, Hon. Mr. Keshoe Parsad Matadeen, GCSK, Chief Justice of Mauritius. Guest of Honor, Hon. Mr. Ravi Yerrigadoo, Attorney General and H.E. the High Commissioner of India Shri. Abhay Thakur also addressed the audience on the occasion.

Chief Justice Matadeen said that the Indian Constitution is a source of inspiration for the judiciary and lawmakers of Mauritius. He also called for an MoU to promote exchanges between the courts of the India and Mauritius. High Commissioner, Shri. Abhay Thakur, assured the Chief Justice that his request for bilateral cooperation would be suitably conveyed to Government of India. The High Commissioner also announced that the new building of the Supreme Court, to be built under a Government of India grant of USD 30 Million, will be completed within two years. An exhibition on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, popularly known as Father of the Indian Constitution and another exhibition of paintings, cartoons and caricatures drawn by the Mauritian students on Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, were inaugurated by the Chief Justice Matadeen.
